ANGLIA FILMS (CONTINENTAL) LTD

(1937-1938)

Anglia Films (Continental) Ltd was formed in June 1937, along with Anson Dyer Productions Ltd, to alleviate the debt burdon on Anglia Films Ltd, the animation studio set up by Archibald Nettleford to enable Anson Dyer to make British entertainment colour cartoons in 1935.

Despite the popularity of Dyer's Sam Small cartoon series the company was running at a loss, and they had turned to making advertising cartoons. The "Continental)" would seem to recognise the multilingual advertising films they were making for European countries, but these new companies were merely additional legal creations attached to the Jermyn Street studio. Both were credited with the Sam Small cartoons and both were advertised as making advertising films in the Kinematograph Year Book.

A third company set up at the same time invites speculation: Babar Productions Ltd is a bit of a mystery. The character Babar the Elephant had first appeared in the 1931 French children's book Histoire de Babar by Jean de Brunhoff, and the English translation was published in 1933. Is it possible that Anson Dyer was negotiating with de Brunhoff for the film rights for a series of Babar cartoons? Sadly de Brunhoff died in October 1937, and the other two companies went into voluntary liquidation in 1938, clearing the studio's debts for a new start, so if that had been the case the deal fell through. I cannot find any records for, or mention of, the company, so it remains a matter of speculation.
